There is a wonderful article on pet dementia by By Dr. Cynthia Maro For The Times

"When testing does not show treatable medical problems, conventional veterinary medicine offers drug therapy, such as anipryl for treatment of cognitive dysfunction. Though anipryl has offered improvement for some pets, in my experience, the best treatments for aging brains in pets have included corrections of nutritional deficiencies, especially mineral imbalances. In addition, proper hydration, improved levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, reduction of cereal grains and sugars in the diet, and elimination of heavy metals from the central nervous system can bring pets back to a better level of awareness."

Kidney function
BUN is a common test of kidney function. Unfortunately, it’s also affected by other factors

Creatinine is a much more sensitive test of kidney dysfunction. Even small elevations of this enzyme can indicate signiﬁcant kidney problems

Urinalysis
Many different pieces of information can be derived from a urinalysis. One of the most important deals with kidney function – it’s called the urine speciﬁc gravity. If kidney function deteriorates, they are less able to produce dilute or concentrated urine, resulting in an abnormal speciﬁc gravity.

Liver function
The best test for diagnosing liver disease is the ALT (alanine transaminase) test (formerly called SGPT).

One of the most difficult things one encounters as a pet parent is finding a good vet.
I have personally found that as my pets age this becomes even more important.

Pet healthcare has become just as confusing as the human model with its corporate owed vet practices and expensive technology.

Here is what i found works.

If at all possible look for a practice that is owned by a vet on staff. Corporate owned practices do not give flexibility to their employees to put pet before profit. It is also difficult to create a relationship with a vet since as employees they come and go.

It’s very important that the pet feel comfortable with the vet. While no pet loves the trip to the vet and will protest, there are instances where its more than this. Trust your pet.
